After a relaxing night’s sleep, we lifted the anchor in Sotogrande and set sail towards Fuengirola, where our friends were waiting for us.
We immediately hoisted the sails, both the main and the genoa. The wind was blowing from the starboard aft quarter at 20-24 knots, the Southern Spanish Sun was shining brightly from the sky and Suwena was sailing at 7-7.5 knots. It was gratifying to sit on deck and enjoy the sound of the water sloshing at Suwena’s hull. We sailed the entire 33 nautical miles to Fuengirola.
Thursday morning flew by as we took care of a few work-related matters before the whole of Finland transitioned into Midsummer celebrations. It’s one of the biggest summer festivals for Finns. Friday is a day off, so everyone is in a hurry on Thursday to start the long weekend and Midsummer party.
From Thursday afternoon until late in the evening, time flew by as Sanna, Saku and Anton, and their furry friend Hugo came to visit Suwena. There was lively chatter when we exchanged boating stories and the conversation flowed.
We spent Midsummer’s Eve relaxing and strolling in the streets of Fuengirola’s old town. In the evening, we were already in bed, as the next day will be a long day of sailing. However, the impressive San Juan fireworks display in Fuengirola woke us up at midnight. It was such a spectacular show that we climbed up to the deck to admire the fireworks, and it just kept going and going, wow.
Fuengirola was left behind when we cast off the lines from the marina on Saturday and headed east.
